Engaging in Employability - An Information Session for non employability organisations

Dates

Friday 9 March, Friday 16 March

Time

9.30am - 12.30pm

Venue

St Bryce Kirk, Kirkcaldy

Description

Would you like to supplement your existing knowledge and skills to feel more confident about working on employability with your clients? Is it a good time within your organisation to think about how you could embed employability into your daily practice with clients?

CVS Fife, Clued Up and Kirkcaldy YMCA are holding an information session based on our experiences during the course of our Engagement in Employability project, with the aid of research and a toolkit created by the University of Glasgow's Training & Employment Research Unit.

The sessions are aimed at front line staff within voluntary organisations whose main role is not employability, but who are in a position to help clients think about work, address some of the difficulties or barriers to work they may face and signpost/refer to organisations who can provide the support required to get back into work.

Promoting employability is high on the policy agenda, however we know from our experience in the Employability project that many front line workers are sceptical about a work focused approach and uncomfortable about promoting this among clients with whom they have developed a trusting relationship.

We hope these sessions will encourage organisations to do more on employability, do it more effectively (and be able to demonstrate this to funders) thereby increasing the chances of helping clients progress into work.

Spaces are limited to two people per organisation. Confirmations will be sent during the week beginning 6 February.

To book a place at either of the sessions please

General News

The Hottest, Shortest, most inspiring sponsored walk in the World!

Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) needs volunteers to join us in two inspiring and motivational events taking place at Meadowbank Stadium, Edinburgh on Thursday 15 March 2012 6 - 9pm and The Mint Hotel, Glasgow on Saturday 24 March 2012 6-9pm

Fire walking is a genuinely thrilling, mind expanding experience for individuals and groups. It enables people to overcome their fears and realise their true potential! We are looking for daring souls to bare their feet for MRF and help to raise much needed funds for us to continue our vital research into the detection, prevention & treatment of meningitis and septicaemia.

If you do not wish to take part in the actual event, perhaps you could help us promote it by passing this email to your friends and colleagues and/or displaying the poster. Any help you can give is very much appreciated, thank you.

Meningitis & septicaemia – the blood poisoning form of the disease can strike people of any age at any time, but most cases are in babies, toddlers and young adults. They remain the major infectious cause of death in children in the UK.

Last year over two hundred and twenty people throughout Scotland contracted meningitis or septicaemia. Tragically there were over thirty deaths and one in four of those affected will be left with life limiting after effects as serious as deafness, blindness, brain damage and amputations.

Fire walking is a truly amazing experience. All training is given on the day and it doesn’t cost the participant a penny as long as the minimum sponsorship of £100 is raised. By taking advantage of this fantastic offer participants can be truly inspired whilst helping to combat two devastating diseases at the same time.

To register interest please call Dawn Carrie on 0131 510 2345, email dawncarrie@scotland-meningitis.org.uk

Website: bit.ly/Ohmygodmyfeetareho

Poster link for downloading: www.meningitis.org/assets/x/54060

This really is the shortest sponsored walk ever, but could go a long way in helping our fight against meningitis and septicaemia.

We wish to focus activity on what will make a difference on the ground in tackling inequality and promoting equality. Interest Free Low Carbon Transport Loans - Funded by Transport Scotland

In a move to encourage businesses to reduce their carbon impact and fuel costs, the Energy Saving Trust is offering all organisations in Scotland interest free loans of between £500 and £50,000 for the installation of measures that make their transport and travel arrangements more sustainable.

The Energy Saving Trust is keen to encourage applications from every size and type of organisation, including private sector businesses, the government and the public sector. Ian Murdoch, transport manager at the Energy Saving Trust in Scotland, says:

“We want people to tell us what they would like to do, whether it’s switching to low-emission vehicles, buying a video conferencing unit or encouraging cycle to-work schemes by providing shower facilities at work”.
“The loans are a great way of boosting your organisations corporate and social responsibility, and as they’re interest free with repayments spread over six years, it’s an attractive proposition. Funds are limited, so I would recommend getting applications in sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment.”

Funded by Transport Scotland (an agency of the Scottish Government), the loans can be used to meet installation costs of a wide range of measures including:

Accessing the loan is easy. An Energy Saving Trust Transport Specialist can come out to your organisation for half a day to assess your transport needs, and to identify cost-saving measures and how best to reduce carbon emissions. This sustainable transport review is free, and used to produce an independent report of recommendations tailored to your organisations needs.

Organisations who have already completed a travel plan or a grey or green fleet review with the Energy Saving Trust can apply for a loan directly without getting a sustainable transport review.

To find out more, or to arrange a free sustainable transport review for your organisation, call your local Energy Saving Scotland advice centre on 0800 512 012 and ask to speak to a specialist advisor about a low carbon transport loan. You can also visit Transport / Home (Scotland) - Energy Saving Trust Scotland.

OSCR News: Charitable Companies & IPS can now convert to SCIO

As from 1st January 2012 existing charitable companies and charitable industrial and provident societies are able apply to OSCR to convert to SCIO form.

The Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) is a new legal form for registered Scottish charities.

The SCIO is a corporate body which is a legal entity able to enter into contracts, employ staff, incur debts, own property, sue and be sued. There are important differences between being a SCIO and being any other type of body with charitable status in Scotland. Before applying to become or convert to a SCIO, organisations need to be fully aware of the implications that this form of charitable status brings. Please visit http://www.oscr.org.uk/about-scottish-charities/scio/ for further information.

OSCR has produced two new SCIO publications specific to charitable companies & IPS wishing to convert to SCIO:

1. A template notice that is to be completed when a charitable company is converting to a SCIO.

http://www.oscr.org.uk/publications-and-guidance/template-notice-of-resolution-for-charitable-companies/

2. An application form for charitable companies or charitable Industrial and Provident Societies (IPS) wishing to convert to a SCIO (Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation).

Quit and Win! 2012 Workplace Stop Smoking Competition

Tobacco remains a major cause of ill-health and premature death in Scotland, causing skills and productivity losses among the workforce. Employers can help improve Scotland's health record by promoting tobacco awareness and supporting employees to quit.

HWL Fife is once again supporting Quit & Win! Workplace stop smoking competition which begins on National No Smoking Day 14th March 2012. This competition is open to anyone interested in supporting staff who may be thinking of giving up smoking. The competition offers practical advice, motivational support and prizes!

Why smoking remains an important workplace issue

Tobacco remains the major preventable cause of ill health and premature death in Scotland, accounting for more than 13,500 smoking-related deaths each year (1). However, the prevalence of smoking varies greatly across the population, acknowledged by a range of studies, for example:

As well as the health effects of smoking, the annual cost of employee smoking in Scotland is approximately £450m due to lost productivity, £40m due to absenteeism, and £4m as a result of fire damage (5).

Sign up to Quit & Win 2012 and your organisation can reduce these smoking-related costs and improve Scotland's health record. To find out more contact Email address below.

Fife Carers Strategy 2012-15 Launch

Dates

Tuesday 7th February 2012

Time

9.00am - 12.30pm

Venue

Committee Rooms 1 & 2, Fife House, North Street, Glenrothes

Promoter

Fife Health & Social Care Partnership

Description

A new Carers Strategy for Fife is going to be launched during a half-day event for carers and those who work with them. The event takes place on Tuesday 7th February 2012, starting at 9.00 a.m. at Fife House, Glenrothes and bookings are now being taken (closing date 23rd January 2012).

The Fife Carers Strategy 2012/15 was developed by a Strategy Group of carers working together with Fife Council, NHS Fife and Voluntary Sector agencies.

“The Strategy was written in recognition of the important contribution unpaid carers make”, explained Alasdair MacLeod, Chair of the Carers Strategy Group. “A large number of people, both young and old, support or care for family members or friends in Fife. Many are unpaid and give freely of their time and energy, some committing more than 50 hours of care per week. Their dedication is enormously valuable”.

The Strategy Group believes that the support carers provide helps a large number of people to live in their own homes in the community and makes limited community care resources go further. The new Carers Strategy takes account of the changing demographic projections which predict greater demand for unpaid care in the future as well as the changing policy and legislative framework for health and social care.

“This strategy looks at the outcomes we want to achieve, how we intend to achieve them, the time-scales in which the work will be done and the resources available. In this way we can make sure all carers that want to be are recognised for the major contribution they make in the provision of care in the community”, continued Alasdair MacLeod.

The launch event includes presentations on both Scottish and local Carers Strategies as well as input from Fife Carers Centre and a carer. There will also be a “speed dating” session with exhibitors on Carers emergency cards, “Generally useful things for unpaid/family carers to know and do”, the Carers toolkit, Young carers, Telecare for carers, ….and more……………….

The Competitive Edge 2012

Dates

Friday 16 March 2012

Venue

Salutation Hotel, Perth

Description

Perth & Kinross Voluntary & Community Sector conference 2012

The programme for the 2012 conference has now been firmly enough established to enable us to send out to you this programme and a booking form. We have worked hard to create a conference programme suitable to delegates’ needs and combining elements for volunteers and volunteer managers and for organisations’ staff and governing bodies. It will once again also provide an important networking opportunity for organisations to share concerns and best practice with their colleagues in the sector.

While the conference will not have a theme, we shall be taking account of 2012 being Olympics year in the United Kingdom and there will be just a few connections on the day with the events taking place in the summer.

There will be two keynote speakers at the start of the day, followed by questions from the delegates. They are David Burke (Executive Director, Housing & Community Care, Perth & Kinross Council) and Eliot Stark (Chief Executive of Volunteer Centre East Lothian and a Board member of Voluntary Action Scotland).

Then each of the four workshops (on Funding, Tendering and Commissioning, the new Saltire Awards for volunteers and a repeat of last year’s very successful Social Networking) will run twice, so that each delegate can attend two of the four. Becoming better at obtaining funding and the opportunity to win contracts are important elements in the sustainability of organisations in these recessionary times; the new Saltire Awards reward youth volunteers aged between 12 and 25 years, and have been piloted in several areas including Dundee and Angus; social networking, promoting your organisation and its services and activities via Facebook, Twitter and other internet options, is a useful and cheap way of extending your advertising of your organisation. The people who will deliver those workshops are named on the attached conference programme.

The afternoon will be devoted, as in earlier years, to an activity involving teams organised by the seating arrangements (each table being a team). The format of that activity will be made known on the day, but it will certainly be interactive, enjoyable, involve the important element of democracy and have the purpose of improving our and your knowledge of the sector to which we belong.

This is the 11th conference which has been organised by our team: earlier ones were a joint production of CVS Perth & Kinross and Volunteer Centre Perth & Kinross, which have now been combined into the new single interface Voluntary Action Perthshire. We hope that you will help to ensure that the 2012 event is as popular and as successful as its ten predecessors.

The delegate fee for this conference is £45, which includes all elements of the programme, the refreshments and the lunch. You will also be able to pick up materials from the display stands and chat to the exhibitors.

Please return the booking form (one for each delegate) and the delegate fee (unless an invoice has been requested on the booking form) to Elaine Rimmer, Voluntary Action Perthshire, The Gateway, North Methven Street, Perth PH1 5PP by Friday 10th February. Please make cheques payable to “PKAVS Limited”.

Description

Wemyss & Other Wares - A Celebration of Kirkcaldy's Pottery is a student exhibition by the students of the Masters Museum and Gallery Studies course at the University of St Andrews. The exhibition will take place at the St Andrews Museum, St Andrews and will showcase a number of ceramic ware created by four potteries from the Kirkcaldy area.

Also in our exhibition we will be discussing the techniques used to create the pottery as well as the lives of the workers. The ceramic ware displayed was created between 1714 and 1930 when the pottery trade was at it's peak in the Kirkcaldy area. The ceramic ware has been loaned to us by the Kirkcaldy Museum during it's redevelopment - opening again early 2013.

There will be a number of workshops taking place during the exhibition for children and adults. Workshops for children include creating their own Wemyss Cat mask and tail, painting ceramic ware to take home with them and a drop in face-painting session that's fun for all the family. Also for adults there will be seminars by experts in the field such as George Dalgleish of the National Museum of Scotland and Jim Bell a noted author of pottery. A decorator from the Griselda Hill Pottery in Ceres will be giving a demonstration of painting techniques used to create the well-known Wemyss Ware.

Wemyss & Other Wares - A Celebration of Kirkcaldy's Pottery is a fun and exciting exhibition that appeals to many ages. Come along and see for yourself the beautifully decorated ceramics of Kirkcaldy's potteries.
