Hints and Tips - The Bad, The Ugly and the Good

BAD

I have never understood why Microsoft Office thinks that I am incapable of being able to cope with seeing all of the options being listed in the menus - eg I have to make an extra click just to see the Print Preview option!

To switch off this annoyance and show the full menus:
Open MS Word and then... Tools > Customize > Options : check "Always Show Full Menus".

UGLY

A few weeks ago I found that MS Word documents opened from my emails would display in a strange, two panel view, even though they printed in the usual A4 format. It seems that in a recent Windows update Microsoft decided that Word documents opened from emails should appear in the confusing and useless (my opinion) "Reading Layout".

To switch off this annoyance:
Open MS Word and then... Tools > Options > General : uncheck "Allow Starting in Reading Layout".

GOOD

Have you ever wondered what that key between the Ctrl and Alt keys on your keyboard is for?

Ctrl    Windows Key    Alt

It is the Windows key and it can be a real time saver. Use it like the Shift key, i.e. hold it down and then press another key. Here are some of the more useful things it can do:

  1.  Windows Key

Pressed on its own it is the equivalent of clicking the Start button

  2.  Windows Key + D  +   D

Minimises all windows and shows the Desktop. Pressing these keys again will retore all your windows just as they were. Magic!

  3.  Windows Key + E  +   E

Opens a new File Explorer Window - this is one of the most useful keyboard shortcuts and invaluable when copying/moving files.

  4.  Windows Key + F  +   F

Opens the Find Files search box.

  5.  Windows Key + F1  +  F1

    Opens the Windows Help page
