Big Lottery Fund: Investing in Ideas

The new Big Lottery Fund scheme, Investing in Ideas, is now open for applications. £4.6 million is available to develop ideas that could become fully-fledged projects. Grant amounts will range from £500 to £5,000 (with the intention of raising this top limit to £10,000 in time), and the type of activity Investing in Ideas will support will include:

Ideas must fit within one of the four investment areas identified by the Big Lottery as priorities (see article on the Big Lottery Fund below), but it is a fund aimed at testing out and strengthening project ideas, rather than supporting the projects themselves.

Big Lottery Fund : Launch of Investment Manifesto

The Big Lottery Fund has launched its long-awaited Investment Manifesto, detailing its plans for distributing its £257 million share of lottery money to community projects over the next three years. The shift in language which sees the BLF using terms such as investing rather than funding signals a change in approach, as the aim is to work more closely with communities to make real improvements to the lives of people in need.

Investment Grants will be made under the following headings:

The Investing in Ideas Fund will be the first to open for business, by the end of January/early February 2006. This £4.6 million fund will help organisations to develop their ideas through research, feasibility studies, getting professional advice and training for those involved if required. Growing Community Assets, which is designed to allow the purchase of land or buildings in both rural and urban areas, develops the principles of the Scottish Land Fund, which was previously operated by NOF. It will open for business in the late spring of 2006, along with the Life Transitions programme, designed to support people through testing periods of change, and Supporting 21st Century Life, which will look for ways of bringing people together to cope with the challenges of modern life.

The BLF will also be launching a Building Dynamic Communities programme which will support the development of voluntary and community sector activity, possibly through supporting intermediary bodies, and promote the involvement of communities in civic life.

At CVS Fife's Annual Meeting on December 7th, Dharmendra Kanani, the Big Lottery Fund's Director in Scotland, reiterated his commitment that 60 - 70% of the BLF's funding will go to the voluntary/community sector. In addition, he promised that there would be greater flexibility in terms of length of funding (there won't be rigid adherence to the three year funding cycle), and the BLF will adopt the principle of full cost recovery.

This Fund has been set up for charitable organisations that do not have a chosen consultant and may need extra guidance and support to achieve the best possible results from their consultancy. Consultancies are supported on a cost basis, and priority is given to initiatives that aim to strengthen your organisation's structure.
