Fundraising Standards Board Pilot Project
Lyndsay Macadam
Resource Worker
Lyndsay Macadam is the new project worker for the Fundraising Standards Board small charities pilot project. The Fife pilot, unique in Scotland, is a partnership between CVS Fife and VONEF which aims to raise awareness of the Fundraising Standards Board Membership Scheme amongst the local voluntary sector in Fife.
The Fundraising Standards Board operates the self-regulatory scheme for fundraising across the UK. Their aim is to ensure the public has confidence in giving by encouraging best practice in fundraising activity and handling fundraising complaints by the public.
The Fundraising Standards Board - One Year On
Just over a year after its UK launch, the Fundraising Standards Board has over 800 members and counting. This means that 33% of UK giving now goes to organisations which are members of the FRSB.
In his keynote speech at the Measuring Outcomes: Demonstrating Success in the Third Sector Conference, Jon Scourse, Chief Executive of the Fundraising Standards Board, explained that the role of the FRSB is to 'encourage best practice in fundraising, build public awareness through our scheme logo and to underpin this with an independent complaints process.'
He reminded that audience of the importance of the scheme, pointing out that 'Ultimately, the sector depends on the trust and goodwill of the public. So it is also imperative to look outwards and consider what the public are thinking….Public trust and confidence is the very heart of our work – both in terms of fundraising and social capital. We take this for granted at our peril in the longer term.'

By joining the Fundraising Standards Board, your organisation is committing to being open and fair, honest and legal in its fundraising activity. In agreeing to adhere to high standards in fundraising, you are sending a clear message to the public in Scotland that they can give with confidence to good causes. The self-regulatory scheme will only thrive in Fife (and across Scotland and the UK) with the backing of the fundraising sector. Your support in joining the Fundraising Standards Board is therefore vital to its long-term success.
During 2007/2008, Lyndsay will be contacting and visiting charities and voluntary organisations throughout Fife to explain the benefits of joining the scheme and encourage Fife's voluntary sector organisations to be at the forefront of best practice in fundraising activity.
If your organisation is involved in any kind of fundraising, from organising collections and fundraising events to receiving membership fees, rebates on premises or goods and services in kind, and you are interested in finding out more about the Fundraising Standards Board, you can contact Lyndsay at CVS Fife or VONEF.
Lyndsay will also be attending events such as local forums, seminars and fundraising events to speak to groups about the project. If you know of an event where you think people would be interested in finding out about the scheme, please let her know.
Fife groups who have already signed up to the scheme include CVS Fife, VONEF, the Cancer Network Fife, Fife Society for the Blind, Fife Coaching Academy and World At Your Feet.
