Voluntary Action Barra and Vatersay was established in 1967 as a Council of Social Service, at a time when the economy and the population of Barra was in serious decline. Campaigning for economic development, improvements to health care, community facilities in the Islands at a time when there were very few voluntary and community organisations in either Barra or Vatersay, the organisation became actively involved in numerous campaigns on social and economic issues affecting the Islands. VABV plays a central role in assessing community needs in Barra and Vatersay, assisting the development of new organisations and projects in response to emerging needs, and to encouraging co-operation between voluntary organisations and statutory authorities to improve services and employment on the islands.
