- Activities
- The YMCA-YWCA will be best known for its community centre location in North Street, Glenrothes. From here numerous community learning and leisure activities take place – from dancing to badminton and music tuition. The centre also provides information, advice, laundry and shower facilities for homeless people as well as signposting for other services in Glenrothes and Fife. A variety of groups use the building and provide counselling, as well as specialist classes ranging from cookery to first aid. The "Y" carries out pregnancy testing and STD awareness training.
In the evenings professional youth workers run 2 "Y" clubs for 12 – 18 years old on Wednesday, a junior club 8 – 12 on Thursday and “band/information nites” once a month on a Friday. During school holidays especially the summer, the Y provides residential schemes for referred children and outdoor activity breaks.
The drugs education project Delta (Drugs Education Liaison Training Agency) provides a Fife-wide formal and informal drugs education service through a team of 5 specialist workers. They work in partnership with Fife Constabulary delivering tailored sessions in all Fife primary and secondary schools. Work also takes place in youth clubs, “Blue Light” discos and community settings while drugs and alcohol awareness training is delivered to professionals in the private, public and voluntary sectors.
Additionally, The "Y" manages three Glenrothes hostels and 15 flats that offer accommodation and support to 50 young homeless people between the ages of 16 and 25. Young people are referred to the 'Y' by professional
agencies, most notably Fife Council. Once at the Glenrothes "Y", a young person will live temporarily in either a 9-bedded male-only hostel, 6-bedded female-only hostel, a shared two-bedroomed flat within a supported block of flats, or an independent single bedroomed flat located within Glenrothes or Leslie. For those with high level support needs Glenrothes YMCA-YWCA will refer that young person to specialist external agencies concerned with drug dependency, mental health and so on.
Whilst at the "Y" homeless youngsters learn or develop independent living skills such as cooking, cleaning, budgeting or attending appointments, for eventual self-sufficiency in own accommodation. Many move on to their own tenancy with Fife Council,a housing association, a private landlord or friends. In some cases they are able to move back with their own family.
