- Al-Anon has only one focus: to help and support families and friends of problem drinkers. Al-Anon offers on-going, open ended, non-judgemental support to people affected by someone else's drinking, whether or not the drinker recognises that a problem exists. This may result in raised self-esteem, leading to greater recovery for the whole family. For every problem drinker it is estimated at least five other people are adversely affected. Families and close friends of problem drinkers can be devastated by the havoc created by alcoholism and children may be affected well into adulthood. Treating the drinker without also helping the family is often less effective.
